This Privacy Policy explains what information our software collects about you and why, what we may do with that information and how we handle your personal information. The software consists of an extension developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, United States) to be used in an academic research project about Internet behaviors. The purpose of the extension is to allow the researchers to recruit experimental participants and, with their knowledge and consent, gather information from the participants’ browsers, and control various aspects of the browsing experience.

What Information Do We Collect and Why?

After you have agreed to be part of the research study, and have read and agreed to the Consent form, you will be asked to install the extension on your browser. The browser extension collects details of your browser behavior such as sites visited, searches performed, and content of pages visited. The data will be collected, and stored, anonymously - that is, we will not collect your PII (personally identifying information).

Will you share my information?

No, all data is accessible only to the team of researchers working on this project. Data analysis findings will be shared publicly, e.g., in academic publications or presentations, but individual participants will not be identified.

Where is my data stored?

Our software transmits data to our servers, which are operated by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (PA), United States.

How secure is my data?

We take reasonable precautions to protect your data. We use industry standard encryption to protect your data in transit. This is commonly referred to as transport layer security (“TLS”) or secure socket layer (“SSL”) technology. Once we receive your data,we protect it on our servers using a combination of administrative, physical and logical security safeguards.
